Today, for ethical and animal protection reasons, natural musk has been almost entirely replaced by synthetic musks.
What exactly is musk?
When asking “what is musk”, two aspects must be distinguished :
- Natural musk, animal or botanical, very rare today.
- Synthetic musk, made in a laboratory, which mimics the scent of natural musk without involving animals.
The word “musk” comes from the Sanskrit muṣká, meaning “testicle,” referring to the scent pod of the male musk deer from which musk was once extracted.
The origin of musk
As mentioned, animal-derived musk comes from the musk deer, found mainly in Tibet, Nepal, or Siberia. Musk extraction was invasive and often fatal for the animal. For this reason, its use today is strictly regulated, if not banned.
There is also a botanical-derived musk, such as ambrette musk, obtained from hibiscus seeds. Less animalic and softer, it offers a natural alternative to traditional musk.
However, in most cases, perfumers today use synthetic white musks. These are not only ethical, but also more stable and affordable.
